Living the ‘Good Life’

In 22 days we leave for India where we will be involved in 5 health camps, serving the poor and oppressed, the widow and the orphan. Our final day we get to perform check ups on all 180 kids at New Life Children’s Home. This is what I”m looking forward to the most. Laying my hands on each child. Looking him or her in the eyes. Praying for them and having that precious and rare one on one time with them. If you’ve ever spent time in an orphanage, you know that one on one is almost non existent. I know for myself anyway, I am rarely without three to ten children sitting on me, holding my hands, just wanting to be with me and above all, for me to learn their name and remember it for the next time they ask.

It’s amazing, the feelings that accompany preparing for a trip like this. It’s quite exhilarating at times. Packing, booking flights, deciding what to bring to the orphanage that will make the children’s faces light up, daydreaming about what it will be like day by day. But I think the most overwhelming feeling of all is one that lacks an appropriate word. It’s the one that says, “are you kidding me? How am I possibly qualified for this, and why on earth would God choose me?”

Yet He did.

“For we are God’s [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live].” Ephesians 2:10 (Amplified)

Think about that for a moment. This verse is not only for me, you know. He has a plan, and it is specifically for you, and it is good, and it is to prosper you and not to harm you, but to give you hope and a future. (Jer 29:11) The work he’s started in you? He’s going to complete it. (Phil 1:8)

So what is it? If you don’t know, why not take some time with Him and find out. I can promise you, it’s good. It’s really really good.

  1. Mary Ann Moore says:

Oh Valerie- I love your love for the children and how your compassion overflows! Cannot wait to hear how God is going to use you! God is the one who calls us each by name and fills us with the desire to make a difference. Thank you for showing us. So let’s step out and make a difference! Love you! Love this! Taste and see that the Lord is good;blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. (Psalm 34:8 NIV)
